Chapter Twenty-Eight

Wayne lay on the thin mattress on the ground and tried to fall to sleep.

His hunger had been somewhat satiated after he’d eaten some baked beans cooked over a fire. He’d had plenty of water to drink too, although he still felt thirsty. The toilet was a little makeshift hole in the ground outside, and his stomach was off, so it wasn’t ideal.

But this place was as good as they were going to get.

At least until the power came back on.

He turned to his right. Saw Bella lying there in the darkness, wide awake, Mrs Fuzzles by her side. There were loads of other people in here too. The smell of body odour was strong. People were snoring. Kids were whispering to one another.

As tired as Wayne was, he knew sleep wasn’t going to come easy.

He thought about the chances of bumping into Candice out there. The chances of the ring he’d found actually being hers. He knew the odds were slim. She was on the road somewhere. She might get back to Glasgow to realise there wasn’t anything there for her—maybe her home had been looted, maybe her parents were gone. Chances were, there was nothing left. She might be somewhere else like this place. Just surviving. Just waiting for something.

He just didn’t know.

And that was the worst part of all.

“Struggling sleeping?” Bella asked.

Wayne sighed. He brushed his fingers through his hair, which felt greasy. Not that he cared anymore. If there was one positive from this new world, it was that it had made him less self-conscious.

“Think it’ll be a long time before I’m out.”

“Let me guess what you’re thinking about.”

Wayne glared at her. “What’s that supposed to—”

“Ssh,” a man beside him said, before resuming to snoring within the space of a few seconds.

Wayne tutted, then turned back to Bella as they lay there in this temporary home. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

She shook her head. Stroked Mrs Fuzzles, who seemed to be flat out.

And then it dawned on Wayne just how sad Bella looked, and how little he actually knew about this girl he’d spent the last few days with.

“Is there, erm… anything you want to talk about?”

Bella looked at him, then. Blushed a little. “Like what?”

“I don’t know,” Wayne said. “I just guess I… well. I owe you an apology. I’ve spent the last few days banging on about myself and my own problems. I’ve barely asked how you’re doing.”

She looked at him again, then, like she was trying to read him. Trying to figure something out about him.

“Can I trust you, Wayne?”

He frowned. “Trust me?”

She nodded then. Scanned his eyes. His face. His mouth. She was so close. He could feel the warmth of her body; her light breathing against his face.

“Can I?” she asked.

He thought about making a funny remark. But then he figured this wasn’t the moment.

“Yeah,” he said. “Yeah, you can trust me.”

She gulped, quite visibly. Her breathing intensified, grew more rapid.

“Bella?”

“I’m not who I say I am.”

“What?”

She looked right into his eyes again.
